Finally after spending all of my spare time repairing the floors last fall, they’re almost done. Here is a picture showing the repair, sanding, and refinishing. There are some small imperfections that I’m not too thrilled on, but I guess I’ll chalk it up to character.

This weekend, Brandon and I started our very first garden. Our backyard is rather expansive for being in town, so this 16x20 plot has plenty of room. We pulled up all of the sod and are waiting to till it and get things planted (if it ever stops raining and stays consistently warm!)
This will be my first real, planned out garden. We’ve got seeds for onions, cucumbers, zucchini, cantaloupe, peppers, lettuce and more. There’s nothing better than fresh veggies—especially when they’re right in your back yard! Can’t wait.

Finally, spring has arrived. I absolutely hate winter. A week of winter is more than enough for me. However, the one thing it does do is make you appreciate the other seasons. Yesterday, Kaleigh and I worked out in the yard for six hours. We raked, cleaned out gutters, got the grill out, among other things. Yard work sucks, but I actually enjoy it. It feels good to get it all cleaned up. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks, we will get our garden planted and some serious landscaping done. I realize this may make us seem old, but I find it all therapeutic and good for the soul.

The best part of Easter weekend was seeing some of my family. They were only in town for less than 48 hours, but it was nice seeing them. It’s crazy how much older Roman looks each time I get to see him.

More than ready for Spring, but we’re making the most of this foot of snow we’re currently getting with snow angels and a snowball fight.

Oh how I long for place like this one day. A place to escape work and all the other noise that can weigh a person down. Somewhere to truly disconnect. The place above is called The Sunset House and was built by a young couple in rural West Virginia. See the progress of the build and more here.

Getting the itch to take a random road trip now that warmer weather isn’t too far away. Not sure where, but somewhere with camping and canoes. Just have to find the time. Always the hardest part.

Aaron Draplin speaks the truth. Some of you may have seen this already or saw me tweet it the other night, but if not, here is a great talk given by the man behind Field Notes and great logos like this one. I think that my favorite characteristic of his talks is the candidness. He is real and honest, often qualities that don’t come through as easily in most talks. Aaron Draplin runs the Draplin Design Co. If you’re not familiar with him or his work, click the link. If you want to get inspired by someone doing what they love, click play.

The shelf by our front door is full of books and assorted items that we’ve picked up over the years. It’s not really organized, but I kind of like it that way.

Education…

Education is probably the one thing I’d like to change or help create an alternative form of the most. I have thought a lot about the subject of education, especially post high school graduation. College costs are insanely high, even for community college. I think we are getting closer to the point where going to college after high school for four years is not the only choice for a good job, in most cases. This excites me a great deal. I did not go to college right out of high school and here I am now working on my Master’s degree. I know what it feels like to try to get a job without a degree and what it’s like to graduate and start a career. I had many skills after graduating high school, but no real form acknowledgment or validation of these skills. I don’t feel college helped much at all, but that is just me. I know it has and continues to help a great deal of people with learning and growing. However, I think there should be a great alternative that carries equal, if not more, weight than a four-year degree. This alternative should also be widely available.

I have a lot more thoughts and ideas on this that I’ll share at some point. As for now, I need to get to sleep since I will be spending the next three days in a classroom.
